The field of mechanical engineering and vehicle manufacturing plays a decisive role with a proportion of more than 6,300 employees of the total of 11,300 employees of the manufacturing companies. In total, 14.6% of the employees subject to social insurance at the industrial location Aschaffenburg are working in approx. 40 companies for this industry. The manufacturing trade additionally contains the important field of building trade with 1,637 employees subject to social insurance (3.8% of all the employees subject to social insurance).

SERVICES SECTOR

The services sector has almost constantly been gaining importance throughout the past years and in early 2010 it had a total of 76 % i.e. 32,200 employees subject to social insurance. Commerce is an important part of the services sector (15.8% of the employees subject to social insurance) as well as the traffic and storage industry with 14.7% of the employees, followed by health service and social services (10.7 %) as well as the provision of other economic services (8.3 %).

CRAFTS

The local crafts industry with more than 900 companies are firmly established within the economic structure of Aschaffenburg. An annual average of approx. 5,400 employees and 830 apprentices were employed by the crafts industry in 2009. The finishing trades (amongst others painters and varnishers, plumbers, fitters, heating and electrical engineers) are an important part of this, counting more than 300 companies (33%).

GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT AT MARKET PRICES

A gross domestic product of 4 million Euros was made in the city of Aschaffenburg in the year of 2007. Thus the gross domestic product of the city of Aschaffenburg constitutes a proportion of nearly 10% of the gross domestic product of the administrative district Unterfranken (2007) and a proportion of nearly 1.8% of the gross domestic product of the metropolitan area Frankfurt/Rhein-Main (2008).
